As a market manager and a long term vendor, we have observed and learned a few things when it comes to vendor sales.
There are some items that just sell themselves to a certain extent. But truly successful vendors don't rely on this. What takes their sales to the next level is how they as creators connect to the customer. People can do this in a matter of ways.
We all know the guys who chase you to try this or take this at a mall kiosk and we try to walk faster to get away, but they wouldn't do this if they didn't have success.
We all know the high pressure sales tactics of used car sales man.
We all know the persistent telemarketer.
We also know the person who ignores us and is on their phone or the rude sales person.
And we know the sales person that when we leave after buying something we feel good about our purchase.
It comes down to you and your goals. We all want to make money, but soley focusing on money you may take on one of the first several types of sale people. Not that there is anything wrong with it. But We like to focus on sharing our product and why our product can make their life better.
We want our customers to feel good about their purchase without buyer's remorse. The way we have done this is understanding, first and foremost "be yourself", tell people your story and why you created what you created. Form the connection. From there you will naturally hone ways of selling. It is a growing process and one that becomes more fluid and easier with each market.
We have learned quite a bit in all these years on the psychology of people. Remember you will get lots of No's, some people make faces, some people tell you a better way and you may even become the brunt of someone's bad day. These aren't your people. You will find there are many that aren't, but the ones that are make up for every one of the ones that aren't.
You can even challenge yourself with the ones that aren't to see if you can shift their day. They may not buy from you but maybe they will from the next vendor as you were able to shift their demeanor. Sometimes not, just don't let it get you down.
Selling your products at the farmers market is a opportunity to share your passion. Stay in that mindset and your are bound to succeed.
